Customer Review: A great help to identification.
What a pleasure to use and so helpfull, information is key with mushrooms, if your not sure, dont touch it! I find best to look out for a selection of specific and easily recognised and confirmed species, such as sulphur polypore, giant puffball, cep (penny bun) also Tree ears can be in abundance but dont fry them!! they jump about! use them for sauces. Happy Hunting!
Customer Review: Knowing what to look for…
In picking mushrooms, there are 2 approaches: - show the good and the bad and have copious notes to explain the two - show only the good and advise the picker to ignore or discard anything that doesn’t appear in the book. Jordan follows the latter and safe as it is, there is always something that makes you want to know about the Dark Side of mycology, just in case you should wander into its temple one day… Easy recipes, sound advice, safe approach.

Customer Review: Gardening made fun!
What a fantastic little book this is! I couldn’t put it down. I have been gardening for many years and yet I still found this book a really fascinating read and will find it a worthwhile addition to my gardening library. It contains a whole host of amazing tips that I can’t wait to try. The author has taken a gentle, humorous approach and has kept the terminology simple which will make it very accessible to novice gardeners as well. The cartoon illustrations are great and give the book a life of its own. There are some useful plant lists for different situations which have the plants listed with both common & Latin names making researching and ordering them at the garden centre an easy task. This is a quality book that I can see every gardener eventually owning and, at ?6.99, excellent value!

Customer Review: Talks you through all tasks step by step
I’ve just moved into a house needing some TLC and bought this book, along with some others, to give me guidance on DIY. I’m not a complete novice, having put up a shelf or two in my time, but was looking for reassurance that I was going about things the right way. I found this book the most useful of the selection I bought. It talks you through a job, step by step, and gives you lots of advice, tips and tricks along the way. It covers every subject area, has far more information in it than the glossy colour books I bought, and explains everything clearly, without being patronising. It’s, in fact, quite an entertaining read! I recommend this to anyone about to start a DIY job.

Customer Review: Excellent
Title sums it up really. Bought as I was starting to renovate an old house. It’s got damp, needs bathrooms, kitchens, exterior problems etc…. This book helps a lot to indentify and solve these, at a minimum you know what you can do and when to call in the professionals!
Customer Review: How to do everything … in two paragraphs
There is no denying the scope of this book is, to say the least, comprehensive. It covers almost every topic imaginable in DIY from dry lining your basement to capping the chimney and covers it at every range whether you just want to change a fuse or rewire the entire building. That scope though is both its virtue and its problem. Yes I can pick this up and be fairly confident that it will tell me how to go about building a stud wall but I know that it is also likely to be something of an overview of the subject rattled off in a few paragraphs. Often that is enough. There are a lot of jobs where a grasp of the basics and a willingness to have a go are good enough and if I’m laying new paving slabs I’ll read this and go for it. Alternatively there are some jobs where I’d like a little more expertise than this can provide. Yes this book will tell me how to change the main fuse box but I’m not going to do that when it means working on the live side of a 100 amp line! In those cases though at least it lets me know roughly how difficult the job is so that I don’t sound like a complete numpty when I call an electrician and ask if they could replace the ‘thingummy by the front door with the fuses in it’. I’d say to anyone that they should buy this book even if you don’t ever intend to do the DIY yourself. If you do the DIY this is a good first reference to find out what to do. If it’s not comprehensive enough then it will give enough of an overview that you will know what to look for when searching for more detail and if you do get someone else to do the job you’ve a better chance of knowing if they’re doing the right thing.

Customer Review: tops!!!!
this is a great book for the beginner, i’ve just got my new home and this manuel has been invaluble,i’ve tiled sanded and painted all under the advice of this book, recommended for new enthusiasts and excellant for a constant source of refernece, god bless readers digest….ace
Customer Review: Think before you buy !
Whilst I agree with the other reviews, this book is getting out of sync with improvements that have happened in DIY since first publication and keeping up with the spate of DIY programmes on the media. It badly needs a new updated issue with some new features like - the breed of new flooring products growing around us - what is best to buy and how to fit it. The new generation of powered tools - jigs, biscuit jointers, routers etc, then the new types of electrical installations .. new type hobs/oven/multifunction microwaves, new kitchen lighting techniques etc. Maybe a complete section on how best to fit a new kitchen and a new bathroom with all the mod con’s.. there are very little books on seperate projects like these - a money spinner no doubt for someone keen to jump on this bandwagon. All in all def a book for every shelf as the major parts do not age. Excellent pictorial approach and clear understanding.

Belkin Tool Kit - 78 Piece

Belkin Tool Kit - 78 Piece

-

You almost expect a 3-D cut-out of TV’s DIY expert Tommy Walsh to fall out of this bright blue hardback, Tommy Walsh’s DIY Survival. To start with there’s the vibrant colourful layout, the bold graphics and lots of readable small chunks of text with super-clear photos. Then there are the cheesy pics of Walsh (plenty of them) in an assortment of DIY garb, from shorts to trackpants, sporting an encouraging smile while holding up an assortment of tools. DIY Survival is designed to be fun but it’s also a lot more than that.

Should you be in the throws of major DIY expeditions, this might inspire a tantrum, because let’s face it, we all need a Tommy Walsh of our own. But this is probably the next best thing. Here’s a bloke who wants to do more than demystify DIY. He hopes he might even save us the average call-out fee of ?50 for a plumber or builder.

DIY-phobics will greatly appreciate the simplicity of the instructions which seem idiot-proof and include all the basics from explanations of tools to changing a light bulb, and planning before a DIY task. As for DIY-fanatics, keep this away from them. Creating kitchen units, connecting a washing machine, renovating floorboards, building a barbecue… your home will be unrecognisable. Full of great instructions and excellent tips, this manual is terrific value. –Lorna V

Customer Review: Idoits guide
This is a simple book for people with little to no knowalge of building practasices. P>With tips that go along the lines of use fibre glass insulation to insulate cavity walls he outlines what should be common sence All I am saying is that if you don’t expect much then you wont be dissapointed.
Customer Review: Confidence builder
You need to know what you want, before you buy this book. This book is not a DIY manual. Its doesn’t pretend to be and it doesn’t weigh enough! This book is a DIY guide - it covers the most common issues. If you do buy this book, you may in due course decide you want a full manual. I find myself using DIY Survival for an overview, and then going to my manual for more detailed guidance. A good DIY manual is ultimately essential, but they are daunting. As a toe in the water, that is still very useful, this book is ideal. Clearly that was the intention, but it is not easy to achieve. The challenge is to cover enough circumstances to be useful, and enough detail to be helpful, without turning the book into a dull, incomprehensible manual. So, that is what this book is. How does it perform? In short, extremely well. Navigation is straight forward, there are lots of pictures, and Tommy’s own anecdotes and tips. The writing style is jaunty and conversational. All in all it gives sensible advice. It has only 140 pages to play with, but does seem to pack in all the basics, and plenty of the more complicated tasks. For example, we have “Mending a fuse and fitting a plug”, “Fixing ceramic floor tiles”, “Replacing panes of glass”, and “Building a barbecue”. As mentioned previously I use this book alongside a manual (I would specifically recommend the Collins Complete DIY Manual), but this book does stand up on its own. DIY is all about confidence and DIY Survival will help you to gain some.
