Customer Review: Beautiful & well worth getting
I’ve just bought a new computer with Vista with a 19″ flat screen and the images on the Complete Garden software looked really beautiful. The CD-ROM runs very fast. No problems installing it as it auto-loads and finding the plant information is easy and realy fun being able to find plants so quickly. I’ve joined their Complete Gardens free garden forum and have posted a few quations and had some really informative replies from greenfingered people. It’s great and well worth having a look.

Excellent value This is a stunningly good value quality product Much easier and quicker to use than flicking through books. All the plant information is easy to find and well written with useful pruning illustrations and advice for novices. I particularly like the fact that I can make my own plant list and add notes to plants and print them with the images. Easy to navigate even for the complete computer or garden novice. I found it so useful and such fun to play with. Slightly more expensive than most of the other garden software yet if you want practical useful information about UK garden plants and care, then this garden software is definately the one to go for.

Customer Review: No good for the beginner wanting to do car body work
If you want to fix a car, buy a Haynes manual. If you want to weld a car then don’t. This book has a small section on mig welding with precious little car repair related information.

Andy Kane, famous as the resident carpenter and handyman on the BBC’s Changing Rooms, has written a brilliantly simple beginner’s guide for anyone new to decorating and DIY. Never wielded a paintbrush in anger before? Hammers are radar-guided to hit your thumbs? Don’t worry, this is the klutz’s friend, the idiot’s handbook. Before he even starts to tell you how to fix anything, he takes you on a guided tour of the average home, explaining how it is all put together and how it is supposed to work. He goes pretty slow, so no one can get left behind:

Your house walls tell you a lot about how they’re built, especially if they’re of plain brickwork. If all you can see are the long sides of the bricks, then you have cavity walls–two separate walls, each one brick thick, set about 50 mm (2 in) apart and held together by metal straps called wall ties. The gap in the middle stops any rainwater that gets through the outer wall from reaching the inner one, and in modern houses it often contains some insulation too.

Having introduced us to the fabric of our houses, Handy Andy then explains what tools we’re likely to need before embarking on concise step-by-step instructions for most DIY and decorating tasks, followed by an A-Z guide to common problems in which he answers, for example, three questions about electrics, three on leaks and overflows, four on locks, and so on. There are illustrations on every page to back up the words and make the explanations even clearer (occasionally even more pictures might have been useful). He takes care to tell the reader what you can do yourself and when you need to call the experts in, and gives numbers and addresses for professional associations and Web sites that will put you in touch with contractors who aren’t cowboys. Finally there are checklists of things you need to look at every six months, every year and every two years. All in all, the book covers most things the beginner could want, although the real enthusiast may want to move on to the more weighty “Reader’s Digest” Complete DIY Manual or The “Which?” Book of Do-it-yourself. –David Pickering

Customer Review: A great DIY book for complete beginners
This is the only DIY book I own and it contains all the information I am likely to need. It has a very brief section on the basic systems in your house (water, heating, electric) just the basics you really need, presented in a way that is easy to understand and the rest of the book tackles all the DIY or decorating jobs you would ever want to do. It tells you what you can do yourself and doesn’t assume you have any prior knowledge of decorating/ DIY, what problems to look out for and when to call in the professionals. A great book for anyone (particularly women) buying a house, it will take up very little space and could save you a fortune.

Customer Review: Obscure book from my childhood
Nobody seems to remember this book, but I remember it distinctly. It seems odd that a videogame guidebook could be considered one of the most memorable pieces of prose someone ever read, but when I began thinking again about playing FF3/FF6 back when I was a kid, and having this book then, I remembered. Olafson warns the reader immediately in the intro that he’s going to write a story instead of a straightforward cheat guide. He admits he hasn’t written from a designer’s perspective, but from the one of someone who’s played it quite a few times, and the hints aren’t mapped out like in new books, and there aren’t maps for every dungeon, and there aren’t bulleted lists of items, and there aren’t spoiler warnings. The entire book is one big spoiler, because Olafson goes through every piece of plot, but also looks at the story. Not just what happens, how it happens, but why it happens, and how the characters feel. Analyzing dialogue. Mentioning tilts of the sprite’s head. Going into thematic issues of greed, revolution, identity, love, betrayal, even suicide. One thing he doesn’t know is that Celes doesn’t have to jump. Cid doesn’t have to die. I noticed when I looked in the new guidebook, that it tells you to find a certain fish. But the story is so much more poignant because of this scene. I don’t know if Olafson knew there was any other way for it to play out, for Cid not to die. It seems wrong in a way for Cid to live, although he’s a beautiful though minor character. A man who was a scientist, and was drawn into something cruel, and redeemed himself, and learned what family means, and loyalty, and love. And these things I don’t know if I could’ve gleaned from the dialogue and one run-through of those tilts of a sprite’s head. Olafson seems to have gleaned all there is to from the story of FF6. Gotten to the depths. Sure, he makes parallels with Star Wars and other stories that surely influenced it, and that’s to make the reader understand and see what he saw and see what the writers wanted you to see. And he does it beautifully.
