Exotic Planting for Adventurous Gardeners

Customer Review: Good introduction for the novice exotic gardener
This is a very handsome book, and what it lacks in substance and wit from the absence of Christopher Lloyd in many of the sections, it makes up with Jonathan Buckley’s wonderful photography and the occasional radical insight. It’s not a terribly cohesive book due to the number of contributors and some of the subjects covered, but Lloyd’s sections and those by Roy Lancaster and Helen Dillon are sage and full of their enthusiasm for a different kind of planting. I can’t say that this is a book for the truly adventurous garden, as such a gardener is well beyond the plants suggested in this book, and some of the advice on hardiness of certain plants is as woefully cautious and unadventurous as the advice given in RHS tomes. Quibbles aside, it is a nice addition to the exotic garden canon, but it would be nice to have a book that really did push the boundaries of exotic planting and garden design.

Customer Review: simply brilliant
When I was preparing to move to Papua New Guinea for a 2 year placement I quizzed my fellow workers who had been on similar placements to PNG and other countries around the world about essential items of kit to buy.

They all said Leatherman, one with the recommendation of “this tool saved my life”so I bought one and can honestly say I used it almost every day of my placement

Customer Review: Neat but Flawed
POSITIVE: looks stylish, light and comfortable to wear, logical sequence through the various functions and pleasingly free of techno-clutter - only the functions you might actually want are there and no more. NEGATIVE: display can be awkward to read, buttons can be awkward to operate when worn, Navman do not reply to queries; all minor problems. The major problem is the loss of GPS contact when around buildings, under bridges or trees and even near high fences; loss of signal results in wrong readings. Superbly accurate in open country but unreliable in towns and cities.
Customer Review: Navman R300
An accurate, easy-to-use speedo and odometer for sportsmen and women? You bet. I had to have one of these as soon as I heard about them: For all distances from 100m sprints to marathon training. It’s light enough not to annoy on the run (sits on a well designed arm band), is easy to set up, waterproof and remarkably accurate to 1/100th of a mile (or 1/100km if you’re that way inclined) Downside? Doesn’t like tunnels, dense cloud cover, lots of trees (though it still seems to work out speeds/distances ok at the end of the run) and will not work indoors. Also the screen is a bit on the small side, especially when you’ve got sweat in your eyes and HR is up to 95%. I used it to measure my car’s speed by hanging it out of the window…..and how fast my Dad “drives” his narrowboat (we found he frequently breaks the 4mph speed limit!!!) Buy one and you won’t regret it. It makes training that much more fun, and if you’re also using an HRM the possibilities for pace prediction in a race are endless. GO RUN!

Amazon Price: ?99.99
Customer Review: Performance
This product was a complete and utter waste of ?100.00 as far as I am concerned. It is basically a webcam in a weatherproof aluminium case. The resolution is diabolical and focusing is virtually impossible over a distance of more than 2 metres. The manufacturer’s claims that it provides excellent night vision are extremely far-fetched (even when used in conjunction with a 500 watt pir activated floodlamp), as are the claims that transmission can be effective up to 100 metres - it doesn’t even cope with a distance of 3 metres from the base unit without the picture continuously breaking up or the experience of complete signal loss - even when used with the Swann PC based video surveillance card which Amazon supplied (this product, however, is good!). Unfortunately, due to work commitments I was unable to test the unit before I had exceeded the time allocated by Amazon to return the unit for refund…… Had I known what I know now, I would certainly never have purchased it in the first place! I have now gone to a local security firm and, with their advice, have purchased a considerably better camera at half the cost!
