Customer Review: Can go wrong just when you urgently need a disc
I bought a second one of these unfortuantely because I too was initially impressed with my first one. Howver, soon after buying the second one, I started having to open both of them to retrieve discs that the device couldn’t find - they lose track of where the discs are. Worse still discs regularly get stuck inside and can’t get them through the gate to eject. This is commented on now by many owners.

Opening up the device is a pain and once you open it you have to take all the discs out and put them back, one by one, which takes ages. The fact that I have two machines which don’t work, indicates that its not just one defective unit.

Finally, obviously don’t put any boot up driver discs in it for your computer because if your computer won’t start, you can’t access the discs!

To summarise starts off well but will let you down badly just when you need that important disc quickly! Anyone want to buy mine?

Customer Review: Good product if a little fragile
As storage devices these are excellent, though as others have pointed out they can be a little fragile, of the 5 I have one has been replaced and one is heading that way, as others have pointed out if it could connect via the PC to the www and pick up the details of the disc this would be a massive plus though I guess somewhat expensive.

I must add that I have found the support team very helpful when I have had the need to contact them.

I don’t know enough about home networking to know how well this book applies outside the U.S., but it certainly describes the U.S. environment accurately. Not that many years ago, many people felt they needed either a technician or a 12-year-old to install and set-up a PC. Many homes now are starting to have more than one PC. Yet broadband connections and high quality printers are expensive if you buy one for each PC. How can those costs be reduced? Add a home network. Before you faint with anxiety, look at this very simple book. It will guide you through the few technical questions you need to address and give you complete and simple directions you can easily follow (but feel free to recruit a 12-year-old to help you). Before you are done reading, you will also realize that you may also benefit from being able to put noisy printers in quiet places, eliminate cables, and do lots of neat applications (like visually monitor your children’s rooms and front door) with your network. If you are like me, you’ve heard that wireless networks can easily be hacked into. This book tells you how to address those very real security problems. As I stand on the brink of our first home network, I am clutching this book in both hands . . . and am ready to launch myself into familial shared cyberspace saying, “I think I can do it. I think I can do it. I think I can do it.” And I know you can! The only annoying quality about this book comes from the many plugs for Linksys products. But that’s better than not having photographs and examples, so I bore with it. This book is not only simple; you can read it very quickly. It could have been greatly improved though by concentrating the material throughout around whether you want a wired or wireless network after providing an initial chapter that helped you choose one or the other. Now, you have to slog through every page to find all the information you need for one or the other. Perhaps in a future edition, this book will be updated to deal with that problem.

Customer Review: Fun to build, but is it natural?
There is a wide range of projects in this book, from the reasonably straightforward to those which call for a sizeable degree of skill. I rather struggled with the hydraulic probe, but there was an intense burst of satisfaction on completion! This is a fine selection of designs certainly, but I am only giving it four stars. Doreen has grown quite attached to her ‘Bastille Battering Ram’ and I am being asked to refuel the petrol-driven engine at least once a week! However, personally I believe that natural ways are the best and I soon found myself returning to traditional methods- a king-sized tub of lard and a rubber glove is more than enough for me!

If you found the Grand Designs show an inspiration that left you wanting to find out more, then I'd recommend this book. The photography is great, and while it's not a guide to “The Good Life”, you should find enough inspiriation that if your thirst is generally wetted, you'll be looking in to the sustainability issues much more. A fantastic Christmas present.

“Which?” Book of Do-it-yourself (”Which?” Guides)
If DIY is a scary prospect for you, then The “Which?” Book of Do-it-yourself can certainly help. But be careful, it may just tip you over the edge as you realise that there is now no excuse for not getting those pesky jobs around the house done right! Mike Lawrence will astound and enlighten as he guides you through a huge diversity of information, from how your house is actually constructed to the knowledge you need to build a custom tool set to cater for the most obscure demands property ownership can throw at you.

There are four major sections in the book. “Around The House”, “Materials”, “Tools” and “Techniques”. The first, as previously mentioned, explains how your house is actually put together, meaning you’ll have knowledge that will prepare you for what you might find behind that wall or under that floor. “Materials” completely demystifies the world of the builders yard and this will help you get the trade discounts and not appear to be a complete idiot when you go to buy the raw materials you’ll need. “Tools” will mean there’s now no excuse for using a piece of household cutlery to undo a plug, while “Techniques” will help you lend professional insight and flair to your projects so that the finished result isn’t the dogs dinner it might otherwise have been.

The projects cover everything you can think of, from servicing the expansion tank on your central heating system through to erecting a garden shed and all the information is supported by great illustrations. It’s genuinely amazing. Every topic covered also has a handy “Life-Belt” paragraph, so if you do botch up the task in hand you have the information to allow you to back track and start again. Some tools seem to have American names, a crow-bar or jemmy is known as a “wrecking bar”, but this is just nit picking. The “Which?” Book of Do-it- yourself is otherwise almost perfect.

Did you know a good way to remove excess paint from a brush is by dabbing it against a piece of string tied across an open paint tin? No, neither did I. It’s that kind of detail that’ll keep you awake at night wondering what to take on next. Don’t over do-it-yourself it! –Tony Martin

This is a really clear, totally straightforward DIY guide. If, like me you’ve just got started on DIY it goes a long way to reassure you that you’re not undertaking the impossible. The diagrams are good and despite being a paperback it’s actually very comprehensive and told me about stuff that I had no idea would ever need maintenance! It’s quite ‘dad-ish’ in tone but that makes a nice change from all the handy andy quick fix books that are around at the moment. Thoroughly recommended.

Actually I would give this three stars except that you can’t turn the sound effects off and they’re really annoying! The reason that this product seems to get 5 stars or 1 star on the reviews is to do with how you want to access the material- which does seem to be pretty comprehensive- so it deserves better than 1 star. The database only lets you search in very specific ways - fine if you want use the programme to suggest planting schemes and varieties but not if you want to use it, say, you identify a plant as you might use a field guide or paper encyclopedia - I contacted the author through the website who was very nice about it all but not able to help (search me I’m not the programmer!) I think he should fire his programmer and get someone to install a preferences menu so you can turn the **** sounds off and a browser so you can search through the images in whatever way you need to !!!
Customer Review: A must for the serious gardener and professional alike.
To put the review into context I should explain a bit about myself: I’m a part time student, studying Landscape Architecture, who works as a senior architectural technician in an architectural practice. I bought this software to help me identify plants to include in my planting schemes for University. This software has far exceeded my expectations. A significant part of its development seems to have been based on the end user interface, making it easy to use for all. It contains a mine of information on each plant (complete with a choice of photographs). And simplifies the process of choosing plants for virtually any condition or aspect, to a degree where it almost becomes effortless. A bonus of the software being devolved in the uk is that the plants are specific to our(uk) planting zone, alleviating the need to carry out additional filtering of information, which I know from past experience, is the case with software developed outside this country. I took the software to University for my tutor and fellow students to see, they were impressed enough to buy copies for themselves. A well considered product that has been thoughtfully developed, a pleasure to use.

What a fantastic little book this is! I couldn’t put it down. I have been gardening for many years and yet I still found this book a really fascinating read and will find it a worthwhile addition to my gardening library. It contains a whole host of amazing tips that I can’t wait to try. The author has taken a gentle, humorous approach and has kept the terminology simple which will make it very accessible to novice gardeners as well. This is a good project book. There are lots of ideas, and the diagrams and charts are easy to follow. Each project includes a short intro, for example, a little about that style and it’s history. Suggestions are made as to where in the dolls house the carpet/rug could be placed. Stitches, materials, tools, etc. are explained well, with good diagrams and photographs throughout. The projects in this book cover many time periods for decorating, but most are suitable for adapting.

Customer Review: More powerful than the average
I really have noticed that duracell 9 volt batteries last longer and provide more of a shock to my tounge than most 9 volt batteries. They are also hardwearing, not that this is particularly important for a battery, but there are some cheap ones that break basically from falling on the floor! These batteries managed to power a range of electrical appliances in my house, and that is all I`m asking of them. Let`s face it: batteries are basic, and with these ones perfection is almost there. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 was because they are not rechargable - simple as that. Mind you, I wouldn`t spent too much effort trying to buy these online - most good convenience stores stock these, and deffinatley all hardwear shops, so if I were you, I would just get out there and get them by hand.
