Schism [DVD]
Customer Review: Lustmord…
Two groundbreaking bands merge to create this excellent DVD. Amazing video, even more amazing remix by legendary Lustmord. 5+

Customer Review: Fantastic!!!
TOOL videos are just unbelievable. They look so beautiful the attention to detail is mind blowing!
If you’re a TOOL fan you’ll know that already.
The only time I saw the Schism video before was at a TOOL gig a few years back.
This DVD is well worth the money, the remix is fantastic. It’s not a cut and paste, with bits thrown in job like most “remixes” this is completely different. It’s long!!
I’ve yet to check out the commentary but I doubt it’s “boring”.

If you liked Salival you’ll love this.

Dyson DC16 Tool Kit

February 17th, 2008

Dyson DC16 Tool Kit
Customer Review: Moderately useful
The DC16 accessory kit comprises four items - a soft dusting brush, a stubborn dirt brush, a wide nozzle tool and an extension hose.

The soft brush is quite useful, having slightly softer bristles and a nozzle double the width of those on the combination accessory tool that you get with DC16 so being able to pick up dust more quickly from things like electronic equipment (tops of TVs and such), sideboards and tables. Although the bristles are fairly soft, I wouldn’t recommend that the tool is used on things like LCD and plasma screens as there is still a chance that it could scratch them. Uses for the stubborn dirt brush are less obvious as the bristles aren’t all that much stiffer than those on the combination tool and don’t cover much more of an area, although it is able to collect pet hair and dirt from smaller areas like car floors. Both of these brushes feel like they’re made of quite cheap plastic and would break if subjected to any sort of rigorous use; this might be a problem for the stubborn dirt brush in particular.

The wide nozzle tool is probably the most helpful of the items in the kit, the most obvious use for it being for mattresses and larger, non-sensitive areas. It’s about four times wider than the combination tool and, when pressed against a flat surface, is able to concentrate the suction more than you’d expect. It also feels slightly (if not a lot) tougher than the brushes.

Lastly, the extension hose is a plastic hose containing a spring similar to that in a Slinky toy, but stronger, so can extend from its contracted length of a little over a foot to a length when extended of around four feet. In truth, it’s a bit of a pain holding the DC16 in the one hand whilst straining to reach an elevated area that needs dusting, and leaving the DC16 on the ground isn’t an option as it tips over quite readily. The tool does, however, make it easier to get into small spaces such as under beds and other low-down places where stretching isn’t so much of a problem.

I can really only see either of the brushes in this kit being used very occasionally, although the wide nozzle tool and extension hose are a better inclusion and you might well get some mileage out of them. However given the price of the kit, I’m not convinced that any of the items are particularly useful or that good value for money.

Customer Review: good-looking book
In spite of the book contains the huge information about reupholstering the old furniture No new methods described. For example the polyurethane foam is not a deal- the only horse hair and so on. The method of material calculations not included also like as you already have the fabrics factory in your home and don’t need to by the fabrics. In any case the book can be helpfull for the people who is interesting in remodeling of old armchairs or chairs in conjunction with old master secrets. Just be prepared to have all necessary materials in your hands. Good luck.
Customer Review: Complete Step-By-Step Upholstery by David Sowle and Ruth Dye
This beautiful, inspirational book seduced me into believing that I could reupholster an antique sofa of tricky dimensions. The gorgeous photographs, clear illustrations and sensible step-by-step instructions were logical and easy to follow. The completion of each stage was satisfying and thrilling and enhanced my confidence in my ability to complete the project. to a professional level. The final result is a pleasingly luxurious and elegant sofa. I can’t believe I did it myself and treasure the book that made it possible.

Salival (CD + NTSC Video)
The elaborately packaged Salival is a reminder of how creative and powerful the hard rock group Tool can be. One disc of this deluxe two-disc set serves up 74 minutes (eight songs) of live material and outtakes; the other offers a VHS compilation of Tool’s four grotesquely artistic videos plus the bonus clip, “Hush”, from their 1992 “Opiate” EP. Although there’s little that’s new here, it’s put together with as much intensity and attention to detail as the quartet’s other releases. The musical high point is the driving but delicate take on “Pushit”. It’s also entertaining to hear singer Maynard James Keenan in a Neil Young kind of mood on “Lame”. –Janiss Garza

Customer Review: quick, but it before its too late…
Having shelled out on this on import i was always going to be biased towards this album, but im ecstatic so say that it didn’t disappoint me in the slightest. As usual Maynards gorgeous vocals add to the powerful music. Every song it a treat, with the possible exception of “LAMC” (but that the point of the song!). clearly yht best thing on the CD is “No Quarter” and the amazing version of “Pushit”. The videos are so artfully and amazingly well done they stand up to repeated viewings, with the standout “Stinkfist” being the most obvious. As this band have progressed they have gone to strength to strength, with this closing one chapter of Tool’s career, it was the perfect prelude to the majest that was “Lateralus”. You have to buy it. Now!!
Customer Review: A stopgap, but still the best thing in ages.
I’ll admit it. I’m an absolute Tool *fantatic*. I first heard them in New Zealand (where you can actually - shock, horror - hear them on the radio!), and saw them live out there in 1997. In my book Aenima is a good contender for best album of the 90s, and Undertow and Opiate are impressive too. As for Salival? Well, you KNOW you’re being suckered into buying a load of stuff you’ve heard before, but I really didn’t care. The live version of Pushit is fantastic, and it’s nice to hear You Lied in a decently recorded form at last (bootlegs having been available for years). The clear high-point in my book is No Quarter though - somehow they managed to sound enough like Led Zeppelin for the song to sound authentic, while still maintaining their own identity. Well done! Admittedly, Salival isn’t an album I’m going to be playing front-to-back for the next five years (like I have with Aenima), but it’s a great album to dip into. And the video content is always good, if you don’t mind the fact that they’re a little “inspired” by the Brothers Quay. The one thing that bugs me about this album, really, is the fact that the release delay is absolutely typical of the UK. What is it with this county? If people aren’t out there buying disturbingly bad CDs like Hear’Say or Robbie Williams then they’re being “alternative” and buying Limp Bizkit! The more transparent the marketing ploy, the more desperate people in the UK seem to be to buy something?!? I’m confused. Ah well. Buy this CD, and take some small consolation that you can still get music like this over here. It won’t last. (And a note for any drummers who might happen to read this: Just get the album. Danny Carey is one of the most underrated players in rock today)

Customer Review: Where it all began
Its hard to believe the band that composed Lateralus wrote this isnt it?! This is mostly an intelligent old skool metal album, but with a unique Tool twist. The live recordings are amazing quality. This is an angry, angst ridden EP, and well worth the money, even if its only 6 songs. It is an awesome foundation for things to come. And it contains songs that rank among Tools very best: Cold and Ugly, Hush

PRAISE FOR FASHION DIY FROM TODAY’S HIPPEST DESIGNERS

“For me, fashion has always been about evoking a mood –– whether it is intellectual, romantic, or both simultaneously––and Carrie Blaydes and Nicole Smith have isolated a myriad of different moods that we can all relate to. The art school skirt, my personal favorite, could work with a Victorian blouse and create a cool, brainy-gal look. Or, paired with a simple tank, the same skirt tells a bohemian story.

In Fashion DIY Carrie and Nicole have addressed an enormous scope of different styles. Offering advice on how to achieve the easy elegance of a swing blouse, as well as the conversational Falling Leaves Scarf. These two ladies have made style and craft blend into a simple and accurate endeavor. They have created the perfect recipe for a Fashion DIY.” —Alice Roi

“What sets Fashion DIY apart from its counterparts is its refreshingly methodical approach to such a creative art, including practical guidelines and focused questions for the reader, offering strategy for beginners to better manage what can sometimes be quite a daunting endeavor. And while it covers all the necessary basics of embellishment, Fashion DIY is surprisingly inventive, employing the use of recent technologies in the creation of fun and legitimately unique additions to traditional alterations.”

Customer Review: Worth it
This is a lovely book. Deals with stuff to wear. Ten techniques are explained (trimming, beading, colour manipulation among others) and then three projects for each technique are given, each progressively more advanced. I’d wear everything in this book. Cool ideas, stylish and hip without being unwearable even if you’re quite conservative. No jeans turned into skirts here.

Tweezerman’s famous Slant Tweezer is the finest tweezer you can own. Perfectly aligned, hand filed tips grab the hair everytime. Hand polished Stainless Steel. How To Use: Tweeze in the direction of hair growth. Tweeze after shower or use a hot towel to open pores. Use slant side for general tweezing. Flip the tweezer to use the high side of the slant edge for precision work. When finished, use cold water or astringent to close pores. Wait five minutes before applying make-up. Care: Wipe tips clean after use. Always replace protective cap on tweezer tips. Caution: Do not drop tweezers. This can damage the tip and throw tweezers out of alignment. Note: Spring tension can be increased by gently pulling the two halves of the tweezer apart. Once you have increased the spring, you cannot decrease it. Do not drop tweezers. This can damage the tip and throw tweezers out of alignment.

Customer Review: Do it yourself. Buy it NOW.
Funky, punky, heartfelt and witty. Ian’s poetic (and very british) observations on life and gritty vocal/pre-rap deliveries were taken to the heart of all that could be described as human. You (should’ve) or will love him every step of the way now, if you didn’t before. God bless him. The Blockheads complemented Dury perfectly and backed him with a humour and precission that is as classic, dynamic and as tight as a gnats arse today as it was way back when, with a completely natural ease that still comes over. The Blockheads understood funk, disco and reggae as well as they understood their customary pub-punk-rhythm and blues. And that really is saying something as they where truely top of their game in that genres heyday. This is a splendid set of songs that still holds together in the cohesive, highly entertaining and soulful uniqueness that it was and still is. Fantastic stuff. Do it yourself. Buy this album. Put it on, have a laugh, do the screamers dance and smile.

This unit stopped working very soon after installation. And when I tried to clean it, the ceramic disc broke with a slight tap. This unit may be too cheap to be worth it.
Customer Review: worked great the first week then stopped
I have a grey sediment on the ultrasound head after one week. I used distilled water so I don’t see it as something in the water. I tried cleaning it to no avail. I then tried soaking it in a product for cleaning minerals off metal and it didn’t work. Now I’ll see how customer care responds.

Customer Review: NOT A GIMMICK!
Arrived in time for Christmas, ready to fight the flab! I thought I would try one of these rather that an Ab craddle etc.

Very good! Did not take long to set up, my wife loves it, unfortunately it’s quite comfortable to sit in, so during rather long intervals between reps, she nods off in it!

Well worth the money, slightly too heavy for my wife to just lift it up and use anywhere, but once it’s in it’s place, perfect!

Customer Review: The complete Pool Manual for Homeowners and Professionals
This book really does provide, as its title suggests, a step-by-step guide to everything you could ever need to know about setting up and maintaining a pool. Although the book contains a wealth of information about pools, spas and hot tubs, the book is well-written and easy to read. What most impressed me is that, while reading the book, you can’t help but get the impression that the author really does have first-hand experience of everything he is writing about. This gives a certain level of comfort and confidence to the reader that this book will, on its own, provide all the information you could need to know about designing, setting-up and maintaining a pool. During each step of the process the author provides details, from his own experience, of things that could go wrong thus ensuring that that you won’t make the same mistakes. The author obviously is passionate about the subject of pools and wants to make sure that anyone who wants to have a pool will be able to have one that they will enjoy and not cause problems or undue expense. Pools have the potential to be dangerous in terms of the hazardous chemicals involved, not to mention the lethal combination of water and electricity. However, these subjects are addressed in great detail and therefore any potential dangers should be avoided allowing pool-owners to enjoy their pools in the knowledge that they are safe to use. The book will be useful to the home-owner who wants to establish their own pool as it will provide an understanding of the basics of pools and how to maintain them, but the depth and breadth of information provided also means that it would be useful to professionals already working in the pool business.

Description: DIY Portfolio Management describes the advantages of doing your own portfolio management, and gives you suggestions for matching and for beating the market. Individuals who manage their own portfolios have less overhead and the financial incentive to get market beating performance. That is not enough, knowledge and confidence are also important. The individual Do-It-Yourselfer needs a knowledge based plan for success, and the book DIY Portfolio Management can feed that plan. The just released DIY Portfolio Management explores approaches to beating the market. Some ideas presented are refined, but this is not rocket science, and unlike brain surgery this is something you can do for yourself. DIY Portfolio Management stresses that successfully management of a stock portfolio requires strategy, discipline, and time to work. This is a book about managing your nest egg, where discipline and intellect are complementary ingredients. The individual Do-It-Yourselfer needs confidence in their plan for success, and the processes DIY Portfolio Management recommends facilitates building that confidence. Publisher’s comments : The mission of Selact Publishing is to inform people about money, to make them less apprehensive about tackling financial issues. DIY Portfolio Management can do just that for the stock investment part of your financial life. The book is timely now with large numbers of people approaching retirement age with less wealth than they expected. Lyle Wilkinson s text can help prepare people for taking more responsibility for, and control of, their financial future. The text is appropriate for those wanting to grow their wealth and control risk by sticking with a system that works, more than to those looking to get really rich, really fast, with little or no work. Author comments : DIY Portfolio Management grew out of the notes I made while back-testing, paper-trading, and trading different systems. My trading/investing education has probably cost more than my BBA and MBA combined, but it doesn t have to be that way for you. Read more and invested less in the early years, and you can reduce the cost of your education. My goal in making DIY Portfolio Management available is to help readers invest more efficiently and reduce losses.

Customer Review: Better Investment Results
I heartily share the author’s premise that an individual can produce better investment returns than a hired hand. No one takes your money more seriously than yourself. But it takes a focused and disciplined approach to produce excellent results. An investor’s biggest enemy is his own emotional involvement. The DIY Portfolio Management system helps to keep the emotional reactions out of the way and create a disciplined long-term focus to investment decisions. This guidebook gives a step-by-step methodology for producing better returns. It requires some work, but so does every successful system. There is no free lunch. I highly recommend this book
Customer Review: If You’e Okay With Standard Deviations, Get This Book
I worked as a licensed rep at Vanguard Mutual Funds for a while, talking to clients about their investments. The vast majority of the clients were lovely people, the kind you could happily spend a few hours with at a party. Unfortunately, that vast majority, pleasant though they were, didn’t know much about investing. They were looking forward to financially stress-free retirements based pretty much on the luck of the draw. Often the ones in the worse shape were the ones following investment advice from an “expert.” The best part of my job was quickly explaining some tips and strategies to help them understand and succeed. I don’t know Mr. Wilkinson, but he’s a man after my own heart. He, too, wants to help people succeed at investing. His book DIY Portfolio Management is chock-a-block full of good stuff. Using the information Mr. Wilkinson provides should lead to more than satisfying results. However, Mr. Wilkinson does not always speak in nouns and verbs, but launches into mathematical formulae at the drop of the proverbial hat. This will be disconcerting if you’re a dedicated noun/verb person, but with a modicum of mathematical knowledge, you can step through the formulae with great benefit to your bottom line. If talk about such things as standard deviations and regressions causes your brain to freeze, though, this is not the book for you, excellent though its information may be. Ah, but if you speak in mathematical formulations with ease, get this book and march through its pages to investing comprehension. Knowing what you’re doing is the secret to just about anything, including, maybe especially, investing. Bette Dowdell, Author, How to be a Christian Without Being Annoying, The Christmas Invitation

Dyson DC04/05/07/08 Hard Floor Tool
Amazon Price: ?15.97
Customer Review: A fantastic investment
This Dyson tool doesn’t look much for [...]but once you start using it you’ll be glad you bought it. Cleaning wooden floors is a doddle, very quick and it doesn’t scratch (very important to me - my Dyson DC04 upright was leaving terrible scuffs and scratch marks on my cherry veneer floors). I agree that the angle of the fitting tends to make you stoop a bit when you’re using it but that’s about the only drawback. I didn’t find that it came loose as some reviewers have complained (you just need to screw it on tightly in the first place). The suction is brilliant, so it’s great on rugs and carpets too. I’d definitely recommend this attachment, especially for hard surfaces.
Customer Review: Could be so much better
I agree with one of the previous reviews in that the angle and fitting of the attachment needs improving. The tool works extremely well when positioned correctly but in order to achieve this the “wand” needs to be held in an extremely awkward position. I also found that the attachment was prone to falling off which was very annoying. If Dyson could manufacture a type of adaptor which would angle the hard floor tool in an optimum position as well as ensuring a more secure fitting this would be be well worth 5 stars.

Customer Review: Astonishing.
I was introduced to Tool by watching a video of ‘Sober’, which is not on this album (it’s on ‘Undertow’). There are countless bands who rely on video for TV networks in order to make the first impression and sell. Take the video away and you are often left with dehydrated formulaic rubbish. So you need to evaluate something audibly. Tool blew me away with their sheer audacity, power and talent in arrangement, musicianship, songwriting, innovation and intelligence. They are just an incredible band delivering intense powerful innovative music in a world of mediocre formulaic chaff. Check out the video’s for ‘Stinkfist’ and ‘Aenima’ on You Tube. Both will give you an insight into Tool’s awesome prowess.
Customer Review: An Intense Modern Classic
“Aenima” was a breathe of fresh air amidst a late 90’s mess of post-grunge dribble, arriving nu-metal fiascos and a host of supposedly alternative bands creating rather mundane and tired music. Tool swiped all of this mess aside with this sprawling 77-minute masterpiece. And yes, I do consider this album a masterpiece - one for the modern generation of rock and metal fans. Not since Pink Floyd’s mid 70’s heyday had a band created something with such thought-provoking intensity and fluid combination of technical ecstasy and outstanding, often complex, song writing. As a result, this album has become my most listened to, most appreciated and simply most adored album. To put this album into a bit of context - Tool had released one LP, 1993’s “Undertow”, and a short EP, 1992’s “Opiate”. While “Opiate” was fun and genuinely aggressive, it lacked decent song writing and was a bit one-dimensional. This was changed with “Undertow”, a brooding transitional album which saw the band fuse the raw aggression they had with a new sophisticated song writing approach, often drawing out song structures and adding a whole new level of musical complexity. The signs were there - the technical abilities were on display, structures were becoming more ambitious and intricate - so really, the makings of Aenima had already begun way before the band set out to create it. “Aenima” is for me the most mysterious Tool release. Their other albums, including this year’s “10,000 Days” release, all have more obvious themes and take less time to peel apart and decipher. “Aenima” has the oddest art and layout, all of it being very dark and cryptic, including a strange painting of Bill Hicks as a doctor, a neon purple man with his forehead open to reveal a glimmering third eye, and babies being chased by strange green beings. There is also a rant excerpt in the liner art discussing the dangers of “anaesthetic” states. It also gives meaning to the album’s title - being both a physical and mental experience. And this is a fair claim from the band. “Aenima” is both intensely thought provoking in its themes and messages, but also musically exhilarating, which translates into a wonderful physical experience. An experience which begins with one of the band’s most well known songs, the rocking “Stinkfist”. “All good albums have a song about anal sex” I have read Maynard James Keenan jokingly saying in an interview, and well, here is that tongue-in-cheek aspect of his character in song. While many attempt to come up with obscure and hidden meanings behind the lyrics, it is essentially to do with two people joining (anal sex or not), to help each other. Musically it is a great opener, with lots of catchy riffs from Adam Jones, complemented by Justin Chancellor’s bold bass tones, and all set off by the wizardry of the multi-limbed Danny Carey. The song has a rather straightforward verse/chorus beginning but this gives way to an excellent climatic finish, involving swift section changes and contrasting dynamics. “Eulogy” is the sound of the new evolved Tool. A long drawn-out introduction builds its way to a typically menacing MJK talk/whisper, then pummels into a barrage of fuzzy guitars and soaring vocals, instantly displaying the outstanding vocal range of Keenan. Through its 9 minute entirety the song weaves in and out of sections, themes and motifs, combining alternate time signatures, powerful confrontational vocals and flat-out rocking moments. This is the statement of the new Tool, and the wondrous styling does not cease hereafter. Instead of going through each individual song, and explaining aspects of it, I shall pick out my personal highlights, starting with “46&2″. This song was my initial favourite on the album due to its accessible structuring and extremely contagious bass riff. This song is really the shining point for the rhythm section, with English bassist Justin Chancellor creating the best riff of the album, and Carey almost stealing the show with his bewildering, seemingly off-time drum break that never crosses the border into technical masturbation as he keeps it concise, and fuses it with the song perfectly. The song also has an inspiring and uplifting theme to it, that of “stepping out of your shadow”, a philosophical idea created by Carl Jung - “the shadow is an unconscious complex that is defined as the repressed and suppressed aspects of the conscious self”. Here Keenan sings of shedding skin, stepping out of the shadow, ultimately evolving into a bettered being - portrayed both mentally but also physically with the evolution of gaining two extra chromosomes to make 46. The title track is another straightforward rocker, and again showcases a very catchy lead riff and the amazing vocal range of Keenan, sliding from laid-back melancholy to the spitting, visceral chorus lines attacking the poor social state of L.A. It is the most aggressive song on the album, and harkens back to the “Undertow” and “Opiate” days. For me the sheer excellence of this album comes in the two large pieces, “Pushit” and “Third Eye”. Thematically these two songs are very different, with “Pushit” looking at the struggles of personal relationships, and how one has to come to the decision to end a relationship if the situation is becoming out of control, while “Third Eye” comments on the utility of mind altering drugs as augmenting personal, artistic, cultural growth, development, and understanding of the nature of existence…opening one’s third eye. Musically though, these two songs are simply stunning, and the most ambitious works on the album. “Pushit” starts in a rather meandering fashion, with a less than inspired lead riff and chorus section. But the band does not let this continue for long, creating one of the most desolate and menacing bridges I have ever heard, with Keenan’s haunting whispers of “pushed me somewhere I don’t want to be”. This slowly and patiently builds into THE most exhilerating song climax I have ever experienced. The ending to this song still sends my hairs on end if I’m in the mood for it, even after hundreds of listens. It needs to be heard, simple as that. “Third Eye” follows a similar formula, with lots of weaving and subtle sections, all contrasting dynamics and themes, gradually building to a beautiful and monumental ending. Again musically describing this song is ultimately pointless as its structure is so vast and challenging, one simply has to sit down and experience it. These two songs especially need repeated listens as they are way too much to swallow first time. And this is really the theme for the rest of the album, it is a massive body of work, and will need a lot of dedicated time and effort to really unravel its beauty and power. Even today after listening to this hundreds of times through, I am still questioning notions, picking up new sounds, new themes. A truly epic piece of work, and a modern classic every fan of rock or metal should experience.

Customer Review: Ideas for Renovating Your Bathroom
The TV renovation programs inspire us and now here’s the book to help with your own bathroom makeover project. It contains lots of ideas, but I’d hesitate to tackle some of these with my limited practical skills. There are instructions but sometimes they assume the reader has some plumbing knowledge already. It does give adequate help for removing tiles, old sinks and tubs and mirrors. Team it up with another book on bathroom how-to so you don’t find yourself with the bathroom all torn up and inadequate info to finish it.

Customer Review: LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!
I really wasn’t sure if this book was going to be good or not- I thought that at the least it would have some good ideas and nice pictures. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice spread of crafts as well as primers on how to get started in a variety of mediums. Some of the actual projects seemed a little silly to me, while there are others that I will definitely try. If nothing else, you can spend time with this book and learn about crafting mediums that you might want to try in the future. All in all, this book was really inspiring and made me want to dive into about a million new projects. I highly recommend this one.
Customer Review: craftivity = craft + creativity
If your idea of craft is a kit from Michaels, then this book may stretch your understanding of what craft can be. In Craftivity, you find a blend of folk art, modern design and inventive uses for found objects. Many of the contributors are graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design - the same pool of talent that Martha Stewart mined for her industry. The projects in this book are decidedly less mainstream, but no less compelling. Craftivity is divided up into 6 parts for projects made with different materials. The crocheted skull is a perfect decoration for Dia de la Muerta or Halloween (our skull looks great on our Christmas tree). The bag o’ bags is a great way to recycle plastic grocery bags. This book will challenge you to think of new ways to use everyday materials and traditional skills. [...]
