Leatherman Kick Multi Tool with Leather Sheath

February 5th, 2008

Leatherman Kick Multi Tool with Leather Sheath
Look sharp and get a grip. The Leatherman tradition for exquisitely made pocket tools has received another significant boost with the arrival of the Kick!, a slimline 10cm device crammed with an array of handy implements that even the Swiss Army couldn’t do without. The Kick! is a full-featured tool, chock-full of innovation, including a straight-knife, no fewer than three extended screwdrivers (including the ultra-useful Phillips head), a bottle opener, needle-nose and regular pliers, a wire stripper and more. And to help you keep a firm handle on affairs, the Kick! comes complete with patented Zytel(r) grip to give you the firmest of firm holds. It’s even got a 19cm ruler on the outside, just in case you need to measure the length of your own cleverness at having made the wisest of wise investments. And if that’s not enough, the chaps at Leatherman have gone a step further, providing - no, insisting - you have a 25 year warranty, which is about the length of the average mortgage here at HQ. So even after our houses are all paid off, we’ll still be able to do those tricksy DIY tasks with the same tool. Wonderful.

Salival (CD + NTSC Video)
The elaborately packaged Salival is a reminder of how creative and powerful the hard rock group Tool can be. One disc of this deluxe two-disc set serves up 74 minutes (eight songs) of live material and outtakes; the other offers a VHS compilation of Tool’s four grotesquely artistic videos plus the bonus clip, “Hush”, from their 1992 “Opiate” EP. Although there’s little that’s new here, it’s put together with as much intensity and attention to detail as the quartet’s other releases. The musical high point is the driving but delicate take on “Pushit”. It’s also entertaining to hear singer Maynard James Keenan in a Neil Young kind of mood on “Lame”. –Janiss Garza

Customer Review: quick, but it before its too late…
Having shelled out on this on import i was always going to be biased towards this album, but im ecstatic so say that it didn’t disappoint me in the slightest. As usual Maynards gorgeous vocals add to the powerful music. Every song it a treat, with the possible exception of “LAMC” (but that the point of the song!). clearly yht best thing on the CD is “No Quarter” and the amazing version of “Pushit”. The videos are so artfully and amazingly well done they stand up to repeated viewings, with the standout “Stinkfist” being the most obvious. As this band have progressed they have gone to strength to strength, with this closing one chapter of Tool’s career, it was the perfect prelude to the majest that was “Lateralus”. You have to buy it. Now!!
Customer Review: A stopgap, but still the best thing in ages.
I’ll admit it. I’m an absolute Tool *fantatic*. I first heard them in New Zealand (where you can actually - shock, horror - hear them on the radio!), and saw them live out there in 1997. In my book Aenima is a good contender for best album of the 90s, and Undertow and Opiate are impressive too. As for Salival? Well, you KNOW you’re being suckered into buying a load of stuff you’ve heard before, but I really didn’t care. The live version of Pushit is fantastic, and it’s nice to hear You Lied in a decently recorded form at last (bootlegs having been available for years). The clear high-point in my book is No Quarter though - somehow they managed to sound enough like Led Zeppelin for the song to sound authentic, while still maintaining their own identity. Well done! Admittedly, Salival isn’t an album I’m going to be playing front-to-back for the next five years (like I have with Aenima), but it’s a great album to dip into. And the video content is always good, if you don’t mind the fact that they’re a little “inspired” by the Brothers Quay. The one thing that bugs me about this album, really, is the fact that the release delay is absolutely typical of the UK. What is it with this county? If people aren’t out there buying disturbingly bad CDs like Hear’Say or Robbie Williams then they’re being “alternative” and buying Limp Bizkit! The more transparent the marketing ploy, the more desperate people in the UK seem to be to buy something?!? I’m confused. Ah well. Buy this CD, and take some small consolation that you can still get music like this over here. It won’t last. (And a note for any drummers who might happen to read this: Just get the album. Danny Carey is one of the most underrated players in rock today)

Customer Review: unleash your family’s creativity
i just love this book! i have tons of arts & crafts books because i like to engage my children’s creativity. this book is one of the best! it’s not only a compilation of creative activities that children and even grown-ups will enjoy doing. it’s also a testament to the ingenuity of children as it showcases dozens (or is it hundreds?) of beautiful, quirky and interesting things made by children. the activities in the book will also spark your mind to think of other diy activities. most of the materials required in the book can be found in any home with kids. some require the use of a computer. you can always modify the activities to use whatever you have on hand. the authors say that the book is for “families … saying no to endless consumerism and yes to art, craft, and home-grown media.” if that’s you, then you must have this book! i’m buying the luptons’ other books right now!
Customer Review: Move over, Martha. Make room for the Luptons!
Within minutes of opening this smartly designed treasure-trove of craft ideas, the DIY kids of all ages in our household were designing icons, party invitations, and clothes for a community of real and imaginary friends. Beautiful and practical, this easy-to-use guide also teaches that we can liberate ourselves from our roles as passive consumers to create personally expressive and useful works of art–for the ages or just for today. Of course, the concept of a graffiti couch has also sparked intelligent debate around the breakfast table. A family-bonding bible, with or without hot glue.

Pro Tools 7 LE Essential Training (PC/Mac)

Pro Tools 7 LE Essential Training (PC/Mac)

Do we really need books such as Dawna Walter’s How To Stay De-junked Forever? Or TV series such as The Life Laundry, which it accompanies? The answer would appear to be a resounding yes, as more and more of us sink under an avalanche of objects that we are reluctant to get rid of. Writers such as Graham Greene and Jean-Paul Sartre believed that we are possessed by our possessions, and it’s that philosophy that Walters is out to puncture with a vengeance. The great success of The Life Laundry: How To De-junk Your Life (which accompanied her first television series showing us how to clear the clutter) was a sage mixture of both fairly elementary advice and some cutting, not-so-obvious truths. Apart from those few people living in minimalist Japanese-style homes, many of us found much food for thought in Walter’s book and programme, and a great deal of weeding out of old clothes, magazines, toys, etc, no doubt took place after she had shown us the way.

In the new book, though, her concern is with making us alter our lifestyles completely in order that the clutter will never return. She teaches that, in order to create a functioning, organic environment, it’s necessary to undertake genuinely life-altering procedures. There are motivational projects, storage tips (in which every iota of space in-house is intelligently utilised) and a room-by-room analysis of our storage solutions that are highly practical and (still more important) achievable.

The format of the book is highly user-friendly, with attractive checklists, storage tips, floor plans and aspirational images. So if you feel you can add one more book to the mountains that you already possess, this had better be it. –Barry Forshaw

Customer Review: There’s better out there…
Any clutter clearing book is worth reading if it motivates you to do *something*, but I still reckon a much better choice was Karen Kingston’s “Clear Your Clutter”. That book has stayed with me for 5 years, and still motivates me far more.
Customer Review: Plenty of colour
I am sure this squarish volume can be viewed as a most “modern” artifact, but I cringed when I opened it and tried to read the light and pale text on a dark background. Actually, the typeface is hard to make out even on the white pages which, admittedly, comprise most of the book. Could someone thus putting form over substance really have something sound to offer? Turning to the picture of the author’s colourful kitchen on page 54, one could quickly answer: No (way!). It is a lovely specimen of a “never cooked-in kitchen”. Yet it seems that Ms Walter has been able to help people give makeovers to their houses and even their lives. I must assume this ability has a great deal to do with the synergy of people from different trades working together. Come to think of it, every extra couple of hands, when you are contemplating a room or house makeover, must make an amazing difference. If you are thinking of buying this, because you have started to feel crowded-in in your current space, think twice and do a little more research. You can find better-organized directions for de-junking. If you feel both crowded-in and bored with your current space, perhaps the interiors photographed will work as inspiration. Good luck to all!

Max Power Tool Battery (PSP)

Max Power Tool Battery (PSP)
Customer Review: Fat & Slim??
Does it work for Fat and Slim?

I’m only buying it, if it realy does for both.

Customer Review: Works fine.
This battery managed to upgrade my slim PSP to 3.71 M33-3 without the need for a phat bat. Apparently when the Magic mem stick is inserted, it bricks the slim immediately. This battery can solve that and allow it to upgrade. The software required is available on the internet in many places. Total newbie installer is what I used to create the stick. Have a go - it’s cheaper than buying dodgy ones over the internet!!

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High

February 3rd, 2008

Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High
Customer Review: When the stakes are high
This book was a most enjoyable read but left me with a touch of ambivalence. As a handbook for communicating more effectively, it’s helpful but perhaps a bit simplistic.

“Crucial conversations” are defined as those in which opinions vary, the stakes are high, and emotions run strong. The book targets situations in business and personal life, and is extremely readable with its many illustrative dialogues from both sectors. An extensive vocabulary is introduced and I’ve had some of the terms floating like a ghostly subtext under my own conversations: Sucker’s Choice; Safety; Salute and Stay Mute; Silence or Violence; Freeze Your Lover; Pool of Shared Meaning. It’s all useful even if reductionist.

The techniques offered for effective negotiation are generally quite obvious, yet they bear repeating and codifying. They are, however, techniques, and as such they probably won’t give earth-shaking results without an understanding of what’s making people tick. Conversation and negotiation are so much more than technique.

CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS is an ideal offering for the best-seller market and would be a great springboard for leadership development workshops.

My two picks for the best advice in this book:

(1) Stay focused on what you really want.

(2) If you give this book to a partner or business associate, don’t take a yellow highlighter to the parts you think they need before you give it; better to work on your own side of the crucial conversations.

Linda Bulger, 2008

Customer Review: Mostly brilliant - sometimes boring
The best part of it is that it really helps, it doesn’t read like your classic self-help book either. The analysis comes off as scientific and intelligent, not your average “I think it’s like this” book. The downside is that it also gets a bit boring and lengthy at points - once you’ve gotten the point it often continues five more pages. Some points in the book I found hard to apply, but around 80% of the advice is directly applicable. It is full of examples - but they are served exactly the same way everytime : short and heavy handed. I’d rather see some more real-life examples with all the subleties we use in our language.

Customer Review: A must read book for beginners, DIYers & electricians alike.
I am going through a career change which includes qualifying as a domestic electrician and this book has been vital in preparing myself for the courses i need to take. This is one of the most comprehensive study books i have ever read. Everything is very clearly and logically laid out, and written in a style which is both easy to read and easy to understand. You do not need to read the book from cover to cover. I have dipped into different subjects and chapters at different times and still the meaning remains clear. The question papers at the end of each chapter are perfect for checking your understanding, making sure that you are learning the important information and not the trivia which has to be included for legal reasons! Overall, a superb book which can be used as a revision/reference aid for experienced electricians and as a fantastic grounding in the subject for people who are starting out in the trade. Also, DIYers would be very well served by taking the time to read this book in order to fully understand what they should and shouldn’t touch and why!

Organic Alfalfa Sprouting Seeds - One of the most popular, nutritious & delicious of all sprouting seeds. Alfalfa sprouts are very tasty, with a sweet, nut-like flavor. Alfalfa sprouts are what people typically think of when you mention sprouts. They are the ones you commonly see at a salad bar. Rich in phytochemicals, they protect against cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis and fibrocystic breast disease. They stimulate natural killer cell activity, which strengthens the immune system. What’s more, they are beneficial in reducing symptoms of PMS and menopause, including hot flashes. Furthermore, they contain high concentrations of antioxidants, the body’s defense against the destruction of DNA which is the cause of aging. Alfalfa sprouts are abundant sources of vitamins A, B, C, E and K, the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace elements. They contain 35% protein. One pound of alfalfa seed produces 10-14 pounds of sprouts.

DIY Live Rock - Make Your Own!
The modern reef aquarium tends to utilize a more natural form of filtration to maintain the best water quality. This is typically a combination of live sand and live rock from the ocean. Unfortunately, real live rock is quite expensive, $5 to $10 per pound, and the recommended about is about two pounds per gallon of aquarium. This can easily cost hundreds of dollars. In addition, harvesting real live rock can do damage to out precious coral reefs.

This manual describes how to make your own live rock from common materials found locally. It makes a great family project, helps protect our coral reefs and best of all, only costs about 25 cents per pound to make!

Customer Review: quintessential drywall
This book thoroughly covers the subject and now introduces the latest automated taping equipment available. Whilst this is an American publication all the Drywall application in the UK uses American/Canadian equipment and even tapes. Great finishes are possible with the simplest of equipment though and it should be borne in mind that the end result is dependent on the quality of the original boarding/sheeting job. It is entirely possible and indeed desireable that the finish matches that of the plasterer, provided the speed at reaching that finish is greater then the decision to use this technique has been justified. Still trying to catch on in the UK this book will thoroughly convert any Drywall sceptics.

Customer Review: Beware of what it says on the pack
Although on the face of it this looks like a good value pack my disappointment began with discovering that the DIY CD is not compatible with Windows XP, despite the package being advertised as suitable for the XP platform. Amazon’s returns policy tells me that I cannot return it as I have removed it from its plastic wrapping so I am not a happy bunny. Visual Home Deluxe is an American product and the house sfeatured are not ones you are likely come across in the UK or Ireland nor are the design styles. I was most interested in using it for trying out interior decoration i.e. testing colours in different rooms and specifically the hallway but the hallway does not feature nor does the colour option. Very disppointing all round

I ordered this book believing that I was really going to learn new ways or get fresh ideas for jewelry, but I was very dissapointed to find out I was not. Some of the projects looked very interesting, but the instructions lack clear explanation and some of the pictures were confusing. It seem to be the photo of the same step of the project. Not recommend, unless you have a good experience with many techniques. I consider myself to be a experience/diverse jewelry maker, and this book certanly won’t explain or shown me new Ideas.

Customer Review: Great item.
First thing to note with this item is that although Amazon state it is from 2yrs, the box does infact state 3yrs. The only other down-side to this item is that there is no volume control, and by default the volume is quite loud. On the other hand i would still recommend this item to other people as our 2 year old hasn’t stopped playing with it since Christmas day. Assembly was straight forward, instructions were easy, took about 10 minutes to put together. This item would have got full marks if it wasn’t for the volume issue.
Customer Review: Bob
I got 1 of these benches for my little boy as a christmas present. I would love to say that its fantastic but the tools and build quality do let it down. The sounds are very good and my boy loves them…but they are just a bit too loud…unless you want to wake the dead! my son would probably rate it as 5* only I’ve seen better units out there now.

Customer Review: Don’t waste your money
I can’t believe that the previous reviewers were reading the same book as I was. This book is badly put together random paragraphs and looks rediculously outdated. It is littered with ‘humorous’ cartoons that I found stupid and patronising. It is laid out in magazine style but with less style and content. Under the section for ‘Installing a septic tank’ for example, it tells you what one is, in about 3 sentences, no more information can be seen on septic tanks. If you must by a book on building, you can spend your ?12 in a much better way (I recommend The Housebuilders Bible) The only thing that I can see anyone finding that this is a good book is if they have no previous building or DIY experience what so ever.
Customer Review: Best Step by Step Guide for Layman
Having built my own 2 storey extension for around ?10k, (2 rooms), I releid heavily on book and the internet. This book is the best one for explaining the steps and choices you make, in a step by step guide for the layman, necessary to ‘understand’ a project. Highly recommend this and the housebuilders bible, which gives detial and prices necessary to be able to actually ‘manage’ a project.
